There are so many beautiful shades of foundations but if you are not aware of your skin type or color it can be a little challenging. As a makeup artist, it can be simple for me to mix and match colors to make a perfect foundation for you. No one is one color and we are different shades of color all over our faces. High tone colors and dark hues shade our face, literally creating a work of art. So, to balance these shades it’s important to find a foundation that can blend those colors to give you a great look.
If you are buying foundation from your local drugstore or a high-end brand it’s important that you know some facts about your skin.
First, let’s determine where your natural skin tone falls. This can range from fair, medium to deep skin tones. So, knowing your natural skin tone can help narrow down what foundation you are looking for. Secondly, determine if you want your foundation to match your skin tone or if you want it lighter or darker than your complexion. Some women like to look lighter and some like a more darker color on their skin. Whatever choice you make be sure that the foundation is in the family of your skin tone. Finally, after you have matched your shade let’s talk about coverage!
Coverage is how you want your makeup to look and last. Sheer coverage is a natural look that only gives minimum coverage an example would be a mineral powder or a B.B. cream. Moderate coverage is not as heavy but has more coverage than a sheer foundation it can even skin tone, and conceal blemishes and some acne. (ex. Powder foundations) Full coverage conceals blemishes, dark spots, and is a heavier product that lasts longer and gives more coverage. It also contains concealer within the foundation (ex. liquid and creme foundations). Another important tip is the finished product after you apply your foundation. Do you want your foundation matte, natural or dewy?
Matte foundation is for oily skin this helps reduce shine and accessible oil on the skin. Matte foundation is also good if you have acne.
Natural is for the look as if you were not wearing any foundation. It’s light and is for ladies who have fewer breakouts and acne issues.
Dewy gives the skin a moist look. It has natural oils that reflect light and create a radiant glow. Brides love to look dewy because it looks great, and gives your pictures an extra glow.
There are liquids, cremes, powdered and pan stick form foundations which all serve the same purpose for coverage and correction. Their job is to even out our skin tones and create a smoother skin texture.
Things to remember:
- know your skin type: dry, combination or oily. Not knowing your skin type can affect the way your foundation lays so make sure you are wearing the correct type of foundation that matches your skin type.
- Also, remember that in order to get the best bang for your buck with your foundation always cleanse the skin before and after using Makeup. When the skin is clean and healthy your foundation looks flawless!
- Cleanse the skin and use the extra steps for the best results: Cleanser, Toner, Serums, Moisturizer and Eye Creams
